Southampton’s Lost Pubs
£14.99
Authors: Dave Goddard & Jim Brown
The British pub is an institution and for generations a social refuge for many of its citizens. However, the ravages of war and the onslaught of developers have resulted in the demise of numerous hostelries.
Changing social conditions, cheaper alcohol that can be obtained elsewhere and restrictive legislation have all combined to compel many former mere public houses to become virtual restaurants. Others could not cope with the financial pressures and were forced to close their doors.
‘Pub grub’ is now renowned for its excellence and those pubs that have remained can still do well.
The authors have endeavoured to recall many of Southampton’s pubs that have now vanished so as to evoke good memories for those who frequented them.
A vast collection of old photos owned by the late Tony Gallaher have been used to illustrate the book, coupled with modern photos taken, as faithfully as possible, of the site as it is today.
It is hoped that readers will enjoy nostalgic recollections of times spent with family and friends in a congenial atmosphere.
