Few people who visit the bustling Southampton suburb of Bitterne would be aware of its rich and varied history. Its first inhabitants were the Romans who in 43AD established the town of Clausentum. On the same promontory, Bitterne Manor House was built in medieval times for the Bishop of Winchester.
Southampton’s spa period (1750-74) sparked Bitterne’s revival. Gentry visiting the town built mansions and the opening of Northam Bridge and the roads to Botley and Bursledon in 1799 increased the development. With these grand houses came tradesmen and servants, resulting in the village of Bitterne, up the hill from the manor house.
The arrival of the railway in 1866 and other transport improvements encour- aged further expansion. By the 1960s traffic was gridlocked through the shopping area and a bypass was being talked about, though it was twenty years before it became a reality.
