Commander Martin R Marks, OBE

Martin trained as a Marine Engineer in the Royal Navy reaching the rank of Commander before retiring, while also working as a safety and security officer and professional engineer. He was awarded an OBE in 1999 for his services to military medicine.
A fully-licensed pilot for light aircraft, Martin has been a sub-aqua diving instructor and chair of the BSAC Diving Incident Panel and is an avid beekeeper.
An illustrated talk examining the work of the Bamforth Company, whose cards were exported and enjoyed worldwide. You will hear about the Company’s artists over 150 years and their confrontation with the censors in the 1950s.
Martin, advises that there is adult humour on the ‘saucy’ cards displayed but that it was enjoyed by the ladies at a Royal Naval Association meeting not long ago! Indeed, the content remains with the older, double-entendre humour, style which has sadly been overtaken in modern times…
