The floating bridge was a cable ferry that linked Woolston and Southampton from 1836 until the opening of the Itchen Bridge in 1977. Initially owned by a private company, the Floating Bridge Company. The first Floating Bridge started operating in November 1836, replacing the small ferry boats that until then had operated across the Itchen.
